Hello everyone. Thank you so much for your support so far. It is with a heavy heart that I write this journal.
As you all know March was a taxing month - money was tight, I had lots of medical bills, and my mental health suffered as a consequence. Towards the end of March my Service Dog Phoenix (2 years old 4 months, German Shepard) started getting sick. It was very mild at first but progressed to where it was today in less than a week and a half.
Before you ask why I didn't try harder to get her in sooner when she was sick, I literally had no money. I ate oatmeal for over a week and a half because I could not buy groceries. Every penny I made was being saved so that I could afford a vet visit for her.
Yesterday afternoon Phoenix was seen at the vet. It took all of 15 minutes for the vet and vet tech to announce while in tears that her white blood count was 7, the lowest ever seen in the clinic and that they were not sure how she was even in the office.
I was given the option between trying to keep her alive long enough to do more testing which they estimated to be around 40k+ with a bad outlook still or to euthanize her.
I opted for the latter. I hoped that if I booked it for today that I would be able to spend more time with her and maybe she would magically feel better. She didn't. I also hoped it would give those who love her time to see her. Unfortunately, no one was able to make it or see her for the last time.
As the day progressed she struggled to breathe and began having seizures. The euthanization was not smooth - the first medication which was supposed to lessen her pain and calm her only caused her to stress when she couldn't see.
I was lucky the vet was amazing and allowed me as much time as he could after she went to heaven.
It was never my intention to outlive Phoenix so to suddenly be without her and her support is shattering. I have no one else besides a few friends in this world. I am taking a step away from my physical health for a while to reconsider my next steps and my mental health.

Shrimp, avocado salad with lemon as a dressing, a small sweet potato and a small apple for dessert.

A rough meal for a rough day. Comfort turned fear food was a fun challenge.
